Industrial Painting of a Wet Room

Posted on Tuesday, March 08, 2011

Refrigeration rooms are where facilities store large amounts of produce. They are very susceptible to mold and mildew due to the low temperatures and humidity to keep the produce fresh. Also, the FDA requires these storage rooms to be free of rust or peeling paint. Therefore when rust or peeling paint is discovered the room must be shut down, prepped, painted, and returned to service as fast as possible.

We utilize dry ice blasting as a means to remove peeling paint from the ceiling. Dry ice basting propels high velocity dry ice pellets at the substrate. Dry ice has the unique feature of neutralizing mold and mildew when it sublimates on the substrate from the extreme low temperatures. The advantages of dry ice are that there is no blast media to clean up because it simply evaporates. If cob or sand blasting media were to be used, the cleanup would be a colossal undertaking to meet the facility’s and the FDA’s approval. With dry ice, however, we simply have to clean up the loose paint that was blasted off alleviating most of the cleanup with traditional blasting methods.

Air ventilation is a huge issue as well. Nearby rooms have food products that can’t be exposed to fumes from epoxy. We use large industrial fans and ventilation systems to produce a positive airflow to an area outside the building.

Epoxy is used because of its excellent adhesion to surface rust which is always an issue in these wet rooms. It is also more durable than waterborne or alkyd paint. Paint durability is a huge issue when you consider the cost of closing down a refrigeration room in one these huge distribution centers.

Collins Industrial Services also has two NACE certified inspectors. This ensures that the temperature, humidity, and coating thickness are all within specifications.
